PAX Project Applications Open

PAX project to encourage safety for LGBTQIA+ musicians

The international sacred music support organisation PRISM has launched a new project to identify locations where LGBTQIA+ musicians can feel welcomed, safe and supported in their practice of music.

The project – PAX – stands for PRISM-Accredited Spot (PAX); it is also the Latin word for ‘peace’.

Musicians require a safe and encouraging environment to achieve their best in composing and performing music.  However LGBTQIA+ musicians can still encounter misunderstanding, bigotry and hate in many places.

The logo for the PAX project is a distinctive circle of rainbow-coloured hearts. Accredited organisations, such as universities, music schools, recording studios and religious organisations, will be able to display this logo by entrances of buildings, to identifying those locations as places that support inclusivity, visibility, and safety.

“Displaying the PAX icon will be a positive way to signal to any musician who is feeling unsafe or marginalised that this is a place where all are welcome, and where their talents and arts are valued and appreciated,” says Vincent Fung, PRISM Secretary-General.

Details of the project and application requirements are here on the PRISM website.

Application to be a PAX location is free, and organisations applying to display the logo will be required to show evidence of their ability to care for sacred musicians in three key areas – protection, participation and partnership.  These criteria are flexible enough to provide for the diversity of physical localities and organisations where musicians might be working, but ensures that organisations that display the PAX icon are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for people in the Rainbow community.
